Applying for: Nikolas S'tlian, from the Warchild series
Character Information
Name: Nikolas S'tlian
Canon: Warchild
Canon type: book series
Canon point of entry: at the end of Warchild (the first book in the series), when the peace talks between Nico and Azarcon are underway
Is your character alive or dead at their point of entry into the game?: alive, but slightly banged up
History of your character:
Nikolas' parents were among the first humans to join the Striviirc-na side in the war. To cut a long story short, the human EarthHub wanted a certain moon, on which they met the Striviirc-na for the first time. In typical human fashion, they decided to attack the Striviirc-na to get the moon for themselves. Ensued an extremely long war that is still not over.
Nikolas was born on Aaian-na, the Striviirc-na home planet. He was raised there as a striv, and taught the skills of the ka'redane. He became a better assassin priest than any other human before or after him, and became the head of the striviirc-na fleet, and a nightmare to EarthHub. They called him the Warboy, the worst sympathiser to have joined the strivs, and a traitor to his race.
He once found himself attacking an EarthHub station in order to rescue his brother, who was imprisoned there. On this station, a young boy took advantage of the commotion to escape the pirate who held him prisoner. Niko rescued that young boy, Jos, took him on his ship and brought him to Aaian-na. There, he brought him up and helped him slowly recover from trauma, teaching him Ki'hade, the language spoken on their continent of Aaian-na, among many other things. He started to train Jos to be an assassin priest, but had to leave him to lead the fleet for what was four years for Jos, entrusting him to his mother and brother to complete his training.
When Niko came back, Jos was ready for his mission. One Niko really wished he did not have to ask him to do. He tasked him to infiltrate an EarthHub deep space carrier called Macedon. Deep space carriers barely answered to EarthHub Central orders, taking it upon themselves to know best how to fight the war, and this carrier was even more special than that. Its captain was the foster son of an Admiral, he had ties to EarthHub Central. Niko needed to know if peace was at all possible, and this was his best in.
Jos remained undercover for a couple of years, while Niko worked his own end of the war, trying to keep the Hub forces out of striviirc-na space. He found out that his own brother, also an assassin priest, had made an alliance with pirates, trading children, slaves, and guns behind his back, but he needed proof. Eventually, Macedon and Niko's ships allied against the pirates, and renegade symps and striv. Jos had to blow his cover to get Macedon's captain to trust Niko enough for this to happen. They caught the leaders of this alliance, the head pirate and Niko's brother, and then agreed to open peace talks, whether Earthhub agreed to it or not. Jos would stay on Macedon as her captain's link to the Striviirc-na and interpreter.
When Niko comes to Quiet Pines, he will just have been surprised by the one last pirate ship they need to catch. Turundl'rar, his ship, will be under fire, and he will be running for the command centre, trying to keep his footing despite the shocks of the attack. He bangs his head and struggles to make it to the command centre. A voice on his comm is beckoning him to keep going, keep going, only the only place this leads him is to the desert, with a small town in the distance, by a big cliff, and that town doesn't look striv.
Personality:
Niko has been brought up in a time of war. His whole being was shaped by that. He has a highly developed sense of duty, which is actually linked to his spirituality. The striviirc-na society he was brought up in does not have a religion per se, since they do not believe in any god or gods, but they do believe in a spiritual search for hiaviirc-na, literally the sacred place, the place that is most right for you, where you belong. While their society is composed of castes, it is easy to switch to another caste if that is where your na takes you. Their whole belief system rests on the search for the right place, be it emotionally, professionally, etc - it plays out in all the levels of their existence.
Niko has found his place in his world, at least for the moment. He is extremely well-balanced, even though it often leads him to make decisions that hurt him and/or his loved ones, but being the leader of the striviirc-na fleet demands it, if he wants Aaian-na to survive. And he does, more than anything; he has dedicated his life to this purpose. He is not, however, bloodthirsty, and is the first player in this war to seek peace.
He is immensely respectful of other people, when they deserve it, but also knows when he must take action. After his brother's betrayal, he was the one to kill him. It simply had to be done, ritually and in cold blood. Niko is ka'redan, an assassin-priest (the closest translation in EarthHub Standard, aka English), and that is what they do.
He will always seem cool and in complete control of himself, both physically and emotionally. This is due to being brought up on Aaian-na, among Striviirc-na, both because he has mimicked alien behaviours, expressions and bearings, but also because his balance bleeds out onto his control. He is very cryptic most of the time, and will give you hints to figure things out on your own rather than give you answers straight away. He is slow to anger, and hides his pain well from one who does not know how to read him. He is also very loving and very, well, zen, I suppose, is the closest human equivalent.
However, while all that will remain true, being in Quiet Pines will force him to look for a new balance, for his na in this odd place, away from everyone he knows.
Stats
Age: chrono 41, bio about 30 (he was born 41 years ago, but is only about 30 due to the number of deep space jumps he's been through)
Appearance: Of average height, Niko wears his dark hair long. He has dark eyes and light brown skin. He has a thorny, curved tattoo that starts on his right cheekbone, curves around his right eye, and dips to the middle of his forehead, as well as more tattoos in the same thorny style on his feet, climbing up his calves. He has two small scars on his ribs. He is fit, in perfect physical shape and in perfect control of his body. He always moves with a sinuous, silent grace, and his bearing seems quite formal. He is usually dressed in grey or white strips of cloth coiled around his body, perfect for hiding knives, and most often keeps his long hair tied back. His EarthHub Standard (English) is very halting for now, with limited vocabulary, faulty grammar, and all the wrong inflexions.
Skills and/or special abilities/powers: Nikolas has been trained as a ka'redan since he was a child. Ka'redan-na is the caste of assassin priests of the Striviirc-na, an alien race. He is kia'redan bae, one without comparison - no human has ever achieved his prowess in the skills of the ka'redane, and he is second only to the leader of their caste. He is consequently an extremely good fighter, be it with his bare hands, blades, or firearms (he likes those less; they're handy in war, but they are not the traditional weapons of the ka'redane). He's also a very good strategist, and a great leader of Striviirc-na (I'm fairly certain men as a whole wouldn't react as well to his leadership). He can also pilot ships, although he is nowhere near the best at that.
